Congratulations Lauren!

Local Pilot Visits TVMS Students!

On Thursday, September 17th Roy Wilson, a local pilot, visited Tusky Valley Middle School to talk with the sixth grade class. As part of the Gateway to Technology curriculum all sixth graders take a class called Flight and Space. Mr. Wilson brought his ultra light aircraft and explained to the students how the parachute acts as a wing allowing the ultra light to take flight. An engineer by trade, Mr. Wilson explained to the students that he built the ultra light from a kit. He answered numerous questions that the students had about his flying experiences and gave them a demonstration of how the parachute should inflate.

TVLSD Purchases 18 Acres for $98,500
The headline and contents of an article posted in today’s (9/16/09) Times Reporter were incorrect.

The Tuscarawas Valley Local Schools Board of Education, at its regular meeting held Monday, September 14, 2009 at 7:00pm, unanimously approved a resolution authorizing the Superintendent to send written notice to Mrs. Marie Reed to exercise a purchase agreement for approximately 18 acres of land adjacent to the existing middle and high school campus at a cost of $98,500The one-year Option to Purchase Real Estate Agreement expires on January 16, 2010.

Tuscarawas Valley Local Schools Superintendent Mark Murphy issued the following The following statement at Monday’s Board of Education meeting:

Mrs. Marie Reed, the late Raymond Reed, and their children have been longtime avid supporters of Tuscarawas Valley Local Schools and of education in general.  Although there may not be a facilities project in the district’s immediate future, we believe we have the responsibility to act now. The balance is $98,500, which is a significant amount of money, yet this is a priority.  Consequently, to keep our expenditures within revenues, we will not be purchasing a school bus this fiscal year and will make other spending adjustments as necessary. We’re deeply grateful for Mrs. Reed and her family for working with us, making a difference for the TVLS community, and embracing a vision beyond the here and now.

"Gateway to Technology" Students Welcome Speaker!

On Wednesday, September 16, the students in Mrs. Cornell’s afternoon Gateway to Technology classes received “hands-on” exposure to the fields of civil engineering and surveying. John Walsh, a licensed civil engineer and surveyor, talked with the students in grades 6-8 about the role engineers play in everyday life. He also engaged them in a demonstration of how changing the natural contour of land affects the water run-off. With the assistance of Joe Burgoon, a licensed surveyor, the students had the opportunity to use GPS surveying equipment to locate coordinates on the practice football field. The students followed the GPS directions to arrive at a series of pre-set points that created a large block TVMS.

TVHS Students Capture AP Scholar Awards!

Five TVHS students have earned AP Scholar Awards in recognition of their exceptional achievement on the AP Exams. The College Board’s Advanced Placement Program (AP) provides motivated and academically prepared students with the opportunity to take rigorous college-level courses while still in high school, and to earn college credit, advanced placement, or both from successful performance on the AP Exams. About 18 percent of the 1.7 million students worldwide who took AP exams performed at sufficiently high level to also earn AP Scholar Awards. The College Board recognizes several levels of achievement based on students’ performance on AP Exams.

2009 TVHS graduates Neil Soehnlen, James Rowland, Heather Becker, Jarrod Brown, and Emily Hiltner earned honors. Neil Soehnlen qualified for the AP Scholar with Distinction Award by earning an average grade of at least 3.5 on all AP Exams taken, and grades of 3 or higher on five or more of these exams. James Rowland qualified for the AP Scholar with Honor Award by earning an average grade of at least 3.25 on all AP Exams taken, and grades of 3 or higher on four or more of these exams.
