Former NFL Player Ken Johnson Visits TVHS!
Former NFL player Ken Johnson visited TVHS on Wednesday, April 30th to talk to students about the importance of making positive choices in life. Johnson is a member of the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame and was an All-Big Ten selection in basketball. He was drafted by the Cleveland Cavaliers but lost his chance to play in the NBA due to poor choices off the court. However, Johnson was able to bounce back thanks to a try-out with the NFL's Dallas Cowboys. While he never played for the Cowboys, he was picked up by the Cincinnati Bengals where he played 8 seasons as a defensive end. Today Johnson travels accross the country talking to young people. He uses his life story to illustrate the importance of making positive choices and never giving up when life presents difficult challenges.

TVIS Student Takes Top Prize In Writing Contest!
Tusky Valley Intermediate 4th grader Lindsay Thompson won 1st place honors in a county wide writing contest sponsored by Tuscarawas County Family and Children First Council - Animal/Child Abuse Prevention Committee.  The contest theme was “what my pet does when no one is home”. Of over 400 entries in the fourth grade alone, Lindsay took the county prize with her essay written about a dog named Rose who, during the day, travels the world to help those in need.  The essay was read in front of the New Philadelphia Courthouse in front of a crowd that included Lindsay’s family and Miss West. She received a gift card and Cleveland Indians tickets.  Each year this contest is held by the county department to kick off Child Abuse Prevention week.  Again, congratulations Lindsay!

Wallace, who is hitting .405 on the season, recorded 4 singles, a double and a home run in his record-setting performance.

First Graders Learn About Motion & Friction!
On Monday, April 7, 2008, the first graders in Mrs. Mitchell and Mrs. James’ classes participated in a distance learning session with Andy Campbell of LEARNnco in Fremont, Ohio.  The classes learned about motion and friction.  They learned that it takes a force to cause or stop a motion.  They also learned that friction helps us hold onto things while the lack of friction makes it very difficult to hold on to an object such as a wet piece of soap!  The other first grade classes at TVPS will be participating in the program during the next several weeks.
